Why a good Fire Service Agreement is so important

As a property owner or manager, protecting your assets and people is naturally a top priority. An uncontrolled fire can cause massive damage to property and put people’s lives at risk. A properly installed and maintained fire safety system is essential to keep your employees and property safe from fire damage and give you peace of mind.

Of course, every commercial property in New Zealand needs to comply with fire safety regulations, and failure to do so could result in fines or even prosecution.

What is a Fire Safety System?

A building’s fire safety system can vary according to the structure’s size, type, and function. Typically, a Fire Safety or Fire Alarm System will include:

  • Fire Alarms (including sensors, sirens, emergency switches etc.)
  • Sprinkler system
  • Emergency Lighting
  • Fire extinguishers/Hose reels
  • Safety signage

A fire safety system is not just about the hardware—it requires procedures, policies and training to ensure maximum protection. Procedures include staff training on fire extinguisher handling, trial evacuations, fire warden training/rostering etc.

What is a Fire Service Agreement?

As you can see, keeping your fire systems and procedures in good shape takes a bit of work. Fortunately, Fire Control Services do all the work for you as part of our fire service agreement. This is how it works:

Step 1. We visit your site and audit the existing fire safety systems.

Step 2. We make recommendations for any repairs or servicing required for compliance.

Step 3. A fire service agreement is signed off, and the service contract commences.

As part of the service agreement, our technicians will conduct regular inspections according to a schedule. For example, we test fire alarms and sprinkler systems monthly and carry out trial evacuations every six months.

Building Warrant of Fitness

As part of our service, we offer annual BWOF inspections, as required by local council. Our IQP (Independent Qualified Person) will conduct the inspection and provide you with a certificate to submit to council and display publicly on site.
